Immigrant Worker Rights

Latino Union members take leadership roles in the larger immigrant rights movements to promote just immigration and labor policies.  The Latino Union played a key role in organizing the country’s largest May 1st mass mobilizations calling for a moratorium on raids and deportations and promoting a path to citizenship for undocumented workers currently in the U.S.  Present at the marches in 2006 and 2007 were business owners, labor unions, religious institutions, community organizations, as well as representatives from Latino, European, Asian, and African immigrant communities.

The Latino Union participates in the Coalition to Protect Immigrant Families which formed out of the necessity to respond to the devastating effects of  immigration raids and detentions. The Coalition, which includes the Latino Union, Chicago Workers' Collaborative, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, National Immigrant Justice Center, Latinos of the Southwest, and others, works to connect families who have been separated by immigration raids to institutions that provide material and legal support.  The Coalition facilitates a series of popular education know-your-rights/prepare yourself for raids workshops aimed at equipping the immigrant community with the knowledge and skills to effectively respond to immigration raids.  In addition, the Coalition facilitates a Rapid Response Network that mobilizes community and media response to raids in Illinois, calling for a moratorium on raids and deportations.

If you are interested in participating in the Rapid Response Network or in attending a "Know Your Rights: What to Do in Case of Raids" workshop, contact the Latino Union at 312-491-9044 or at luconde@sbcglobal.net
